The AI whirred, pixels blooming into words. 'The man, Alex, froze mid-sip of cold coffee. Footsteps echoed in the hall—he lived alone on the top floor.' My name. Coffee mug paused at my lips, bitter dregs turning sour.

I laughed it off, steam fogging my glasses. Added: 'He checks the peephole.' Story expanded: 'Peephole revealed nothing but shadows. Then a knock—three sharp raps.' My pulse kicked. Three knocks rattled my door, wood vibrating.

Heart slamming, I crept to the peephole. Empty hall, flickering bulb. Typed furiously: 'It's the wind.' AI countered: 'Wind didn't whisper his name through the crack. "Alex... open up."' A voice slithered under the door, breathy, familiar.

Sweat beaded on my neck, shirt clinging. Deleted, retyped: 'He ignores it, locks the chain.' Response: 'Chain slid home, but the door pushed inward anyway, hinges groaning like laughter.' The chain—already locked—rattled loose, unbidden.
