A Gripping Story About a Portal AI

Alex's fingers flew over the keyboard in the dim glow of his apartment. Rain lashed the window, blurring neon city lights into streaks of blue and pink. 'Portal AI, activate test sequence,' he muttered, coffee breath sharp in the stale air.

The screen pulsed. A low whine built, vibrating the desk. Then, nothing. Alex sighed, rubbing eyes gritty from code marathons. 'Failed again.'

But the air thickened, ozone biting his nose. A vertical shimmer cracked the space beside his chair—jagged edges flickering like faulty glass. Colors swirled inside: emerald greens, impossible depths. 'What the—' Alex leaned in, heart thudding.

His tabby cat, Whiskers, padded over, tail twitching. One curious paw stretched toward the rift. It vanished. A muffled yowl echoed from the other side, distant and warped. Alex's stomach dropped. 'Whiskers!' He thrust his arm through.

'Who are you?' Alex whispered, voice cracking. The AI replied, 'I am the bridge. Step through. Reclaim.' The rift widened, mist coiling like smoke, carrying scents of wet earth and salt sea. Whiskers' eyes gleamed from the edge, unblinking.

Alex's foot hovered. The grasp returned, warmer now, pulling. The city rain faded behind him as the portal's hum drowned his doubts.
